When you go to 0.0 you are entering into territory that has an organized defense. What that means is, your position and ship type are reported via channels that you can't see, and somewhere, possibly, a fleet is forming to take you out (and the composition of the fleet is such that you won't have a chance to win the fight if it happens).
Basically.
Watching local means that you look at who is in-system (you look at the list of people shown in the Local chat window), and you right-click and show info on everyone, to determine if they are a potential enemy. Show info can tell you the age of the character (and thus what ships they may have access to), and their history of corporations (and you can see if they're mostly pirate corps, mining corps, whatever).
Gatecamps are usually set up so a solo ship like you won't have a chance to survive. The first thing you want to do is try to avoid running into a gatecamp, by warping to planets near the gate and scanning it, to see how many ships are "camping" it, or if they have warp disruptor bubbles out. And if you detect a gatecamp, don't go there.
On the other hand, the situation could be that you just jumped through a gate, and there's a gatecamp upon arrival. What you do depends on how the gatecamp is set up (go back to the gate, or try to warp away to some random planet or point in the system), but in either case you have about 30 seconds to plan, because that's how long the invulnerability cloak lasts. So, look around with your camera, and try to judge what your best chances are; go back to the gate or try to warp off. They usually have warp-disruptors ready, and webifiers, so both options have slim chances of survival.
Things that help with moving to a hostile area are:
- be prepared, with cloaking devices, warp core stabilizers, etc., for moving around. - don't mouth off in local if you get attacked or killed - there's no point. - over a period of time, learn who the locals are and what ships they tend to fly, and whether or not they will attack you. - accept that you will lose many ships repeatedly; it's the cost of living in a hostile area. - try to make friends and not go alone.
